About Iyengar Yoga
The ancient Indian art of yoga can benefit anyone who undertakes the practice. In today’s busy world, many people use it to manage stress. It can be used to help pregnant women prepare for childbirth. Highly trained athletes practice yoga to help them to focus and recover from injuries. Yoga can be practiced by anyone.
The practice of Iyengar yoga works on several levels. In the beginning, the practitioner experiences yoga as a form of challenging physical exercise that helps to develop flexibility, strength and balance. With the guidance of the teacher, the practitioner develops a personalized approach to each of the asanas (postures).
Iyengar Yoga cultures the entire being bringing the body, mind and emotions into a state of balance and harmony.
Mr. BKS Iyengar developed an approach to yoga that makes frequent use of different kinds of props. Objects such as blocks, chairs, blankets and belts are used to help students to adjust themselves into different asanas. Props enable students to work in a range of motion that is safe and help to effectively align the body. This process of aligning and working attentively increases body awareness.
About Iyengar Yoga Honolulu
Shelley and Ray started the Manoa Yoga Center in 2004. They had the vision to create a yoga center devoted purely to the teachings of BKS Iyengar and to ensure that the teachers were of the highest standard. They also wanted to create a sanctuary which welcomes one and all. A place where each individual is guided according to their capabilities and condition. They believed that if they focused on this goal then they would be successful.
Now called Iyengar Yoga Honolulu the center is thriving. Beginning students have grown to become strong practitioners. Some have become teachers. Others have benefited from yoga through life changing events or have come to classes throughout their pregnancy or injury. The vision has become a reality. The center continues to attract new students who benefit from the concise and effective approach which is the hallmark of Iyengar Yoga Honolulu.
