Happy Holi!

Today is Holi, the Festival of Colors. It is one of the most important Hindu festivals, particularly in the northern part of India. Here in Pune and Model Colony, the celebrations are perhaps more subdued (as far as we know!) Holi occurs on a full moon night and celebrates the end of winter and the beginning of spring. On Holi eve, bonfires are lit and an effigy of the demon Holika is burned to signify the triumph of good over evil. We did see some fires around the neighborhood. The next day, people swarm the streets, sprinkling colored water and powder on each other.

After I took the photo of the happy Holi gang, a few of the girls called after me as I was walking up the steps to our flat. They promised they wouldn’t get the fluorescent powder on my clothes, but please, can we put some on you? I said “Sure!” and each of them delicately smeared some color on my face. Really sweet people!
